Painting Business: is it expensive to start one?

Does it cost a lot of money start a painting business? In all truthfulness, it will cost you a fortune if you go about it the wrong way. Going into any new business without knowing what you are doing is a scary. Believe me, I know from experience. I did it the hard way and it was a bit rough at times.

I did O.K. stating out. I actually started my painting business with just a handful of painting tools from my garage. I had a step ladder and I borrowed an extension ladder for a while when I needed it. I worked out of the trunk of my car until I could afford to get a van. No one seemed to care, so that was cool.

One small glass shop owner owner told me, "Buy tools as you need them or as the jobs come in." That was good advice. Each job may require a new special painting tool - so I would just buy it with my down payment when new work came in.

Where I really lacked was not knowing how to effectively estimate new paint jobs. This can cost you a bundle if you consider the amount of money you could have made vs all the lost labor spent from under-bidding. There is nothing more pathetic than seeing new painters giving away their work and eating up hours of low or no pay. It happens all too often. Especially with exterior work.

Plus, there is nothing worse than actually making good money and then all the sudden having business dry up on you. Especially around the Holidays. Having consistent work lined up keep you profitable. It also adds to your estimating confidence. So knowing how to advertise your new business effectively is also as important.

So if you really want to know the least expensive route to go for starting a new painting business or any service-type business, it is to get educated in the art of effective advertising and estimating. This way you can make a nice income right off the bat and keep your business going smoothly and on a consistent basis.

Ideally this is the first painting tool you need to buy. Business start-up information from a good source. I have all the painting tools I need now, but once in a while I will buy something new. The right tools speed up any job. As a matter of fact, I have never invested in a single painting tool yet that didn't make me more money. So don't be afraid of spending a little money on your painting business. Most of the tools are not that expensive anyway. Your work vehicle will cost you the most.

Just as having the right painting tools will let you to turn your jobs faster and help you to do a better job, having the right business knowledge will help you make better and bigger money faster. And you will be making it on a more consistent basis. Not just busy this week and slow the next. Instead, we are talking about having jobs booked up for as much as 6 months in advance. And you can still take a day off here and there if you want to.

Getting a good manual written by a professional painter is the first tool I highly recommend that you should invest in. It only makes sense (and dollars). If it highlights on estimating and advertising secrets it is a tremendous shortcut to profits. This type of painting tool will definitely put your painting business on steroids.

It is a wise investment in your painting business that I promise you won't regret. It will pay for itself over and over again. My first years as a painter were rough but you don't have to go through that same amateur learning process.

Get yourself a fast start to profits today. Your customers be impressed with your expert service. Your friends and family will be amazed at your success also. Especially your wife. And as the old saying goes, a happy wife is a happy life!

If you have your own painting business you can easily increase your profits, keep your workers busy or expand your customer base simply by adding extra services. As a house painter and being in people's homes and businesses I see great potential for this.

Window Washing could mean some really big extra income. Everywhere I go as a painter I see a need for window washing. I do a bit myself when I paint exterior. I have also had someone ask me to do their upper story windows as well since I have ladders.

Star Mural Painting Here is a niche painting business that has no competition yet the demand for this type of painting is high. It is so high as a matter of fact, you may want to do just star mural painting!

Power Washing is another business that everywhere I am at as a painter I see a need for it. Sidewalks, decks, fences and of course houses or buildings. I use a power washer from time to time and in the summer time there are tons of projects to do.

Light Carpentry I have done many a painting job where I have also done light carpentry or trim work for my customers. If you are good at carpentry maybe painting can be your sideline.

Drywall Repair - This goes hand-in-hand with painting. You can earn as much as $300 - $500 in just a couple of days working only a total of 8 hours doing simple repairs like water damage or texturing. You can also get jobs hanging drywall. They might have a basement or garage that they need drywall hung in. Then taped, finished and painted as well.

Adding extra services like these above can keep you up and running longer and having to advertise less. They can help you to stay busy during the Holiday seasons as well. All these businesses go together naturally and won't make you a jack-of-all-trades, master of none either. As a matter of fact, if you look in the Yellow Pages, you will see that many painting companies offer all these services!

Are you looking for the artistic type of [tag]small business opportunities home based[/tag]? Mural painting has it's own large niche market. If you are good, the profits can be fantastic and the work enjoyable.

But there is another type of mural painting that has a much wider niche market and anyone can get good at it with a little practice. It is called star mural painting. The wide niche market is due to the fact that everyone loves stars and almost everyone has several bedroom ceilings in their home, not to mention maybe a game room or entertainment room for watching movies.

These star murals come to life at night when the lights go out making your ceiling come alive as if you were actually sleeping under the stars. My bedroom ceiling has the milky way plus several favorite constellations that are there all night long.

My wife loves our ceiling. Can you imagine what kids would think if they saw a ceiling like this? Do you think they would want one just like it? How about mom and dad? We find our star mural bedroom ceiling romantic.

The average star mural goes for about $250 and takes only an hour or two to create. An advanced star scene can go for as much as a thousand dollars.

The best way to get good at doing a star mural is to make a demo poster to show people. After practicing on your own ceiling or ceilings you can start with kids rooms and as you get better at making them you can do more advanced star scenes for teens and adults and charge premium prices.

These star murals can be done in the daytime and offers you a chance to make as much as $2,000 - $3,000 per week working part-time hours. This is one of the easiest and most profitable small business opportunities home based to start.

The answer is NO. I never had to. First, the people you will be dealing with will be quality people - not rip offs. These people already hire service people to mow their lawn, build an addition onto their home, do some electrical work, clean their house, etc.

Secondly, I always ask for a third down just before starting their job. If they hand you a check for $300, $500, etc., they definitely qualify as a customer that can be trusted.

On a large job that takes, say 3 weeks to complete, I will get a third down and half way through the job I will ask for another third and I will get the last part when I am done with the job.

I ask for a third down in the beginning for paints and supplies even though I usually put them on credit at my local paint store that I use. This gives me instant cash flow.

When would I use contracts? If I was running a larger [tag]painting contractor business[/tag] where I had painters on my payroll. Then I definitely would use contracts because it's not just my income at steak here. Did I say steak? It is Friday, Yummy!

Some smaller painting business owners may use contracts but I don't. I mean, what are you going to do if they ask you to paint a bathroom for them? Whip out a contract on them for a small bathroom?

I don't even ask for a down payment on a small job. I will have it done in one - two days anyways. But if a job is over $500 and will take more than 2- 3 days to complete, I will ask for a third down .

Here is a free report I offer on my [tag]Star-Mural.com[/tag] painting site that show you how to get free customers for your own star mural business:

Would you like to make $250 - $500 PER DAY painting [tag]ceiling star murals[/tag] simply by creating a few sample star mural posters? We're talking serious income here. You can make as much as $2,000 - $3,000 PER WEEK working only 20 - 25 hours!

The key is to target people who have ceilings (Know any of those?). If they have kids you might wind up doing multiple ceilings and even get referrals from their friends, family and neighbors as well (who also have ceilings, kids or both!).

The easiest way to get people excited about having an outer space scene painted on their ceilings is to have a sample of your work. A poster is all you need. Let the customer see the poster in the dark and watch their reaction. Leave it with them if you have to. This is a good way to follow up on potential customers.

Direct Marketing Method: You can get tons of FREE unlimited business simply by using my pre-designed advertising and my surefire direct marketing method that I provide. You can easily reach 150 new prospects a day at virtually no cost.

It only takes about an hour a day to do this. Nothing works better than direct marketing! Once you get business going you may only need to use this method once in a great while if business slows down.

Getting Phone Calls: Once you start getting some phone calls, offer to bring your demo poster over to their house free of charge so they can see what a [tag]star mural ceiling[/tag] would actually look like in the dark. (They can easily view it in a closet or their basement or anywhere they can turn the lights out for a minute)

Tell the prospect that it will only take 5 minutes to show them your demo poster or posters and their is no 0bligation. (These posters you make up can actually be samples of your work.)

I like to give the customer a choice of times when setting up an appointment over the phone. "Hi, Mrs. Smith, would Monday or Tuesday be a good day to bring over a sample of my work? Say around 6 or 7 p.m.? Is mornings or evenings better for you?", etc…

Getting Orders: The person that looks at your poster will be impressed. Let their kids get in on the action also! Kids are your best salesmen! Adults do love stars too though.

If they want to have a star mural done, set up a definite time to do it. If they don't go for it, sell them the poster for $30 or more depending on how detailed it is.

If they want to think about it a day or so, offer to leave the poster with them a couple days so they can decide. Doing this gives you a chance to follow up and possibly make the sale. If you don't make the sale you still have UNLIMITED chances with other prospects - as many as there are STARS in the sky!

First you make up a sample star mural demo poster: This is a good way to practice. In time you can have 3 or more star mural themes. Each demo poster can be a sample for each theme and priced according to how much detail each ceiling star mural will have.

You can use poster stock that you can easily roll up or you can use some that is of a stiffer board stock for presentations. I will show you how to formulate a special paint that glows when the lights go out for as long as 10 - 12 hours. Plus the simple low-cost tools needed to do a poster or a ceiling.

Your poster can show several constellations plus thousands of other stars which can be created in minutes. You can highlight your poster with extra spacey colors, shooting stars and even some UFOs, angels, ghost ships, etc. You can finish with colorful space clouds, nebulae, etc. if you wish.

Again, you simply show your [tag]cosmic ceiling[/tag] poster(s) to anyone that has a roof over their head. Then simply duplicate this same space scene or other ones on their bedroom ceiling or any ceilings they choose. That's it! To find out more visit http://star-mural.com

I'll show you how to find all the free customers you need, supply you with your own ready-to-go advertising materials and everything else needed to begin your own Amazing Star Mural Painting Business. As a 16-year painter believe me if I tell you that most people do not know [tag]how to paint doors[/tag] correctly.

They do things like put masking tap all over the door nob and still get paint on it. You will see brush marks going sideways, (they don't go with the grain as the door and it's joints are put together).

They don't prime the door first when needed, (they put latex over oil-base or oil-base over old oil-base without priming first for adhesion) etc.

Painting doors is an acquired technique. My wife and I did a lot of painting in people's homes over the years and developed a professional way to make doors look like beautiful pieces of art.

When we paint doors, we leave the door on it's hinges, but we do take the door nob and it's parts right off the door no matter if it is a front entry door or a bedroom door. Also, there are many types of door styles. Some doors like back entry doors in newer homes are flat steel doors.

These flat surface doors can be made to look great by lightly sanding them smooth first and then priming and painting them using a shed-resistant speed roller or hot dog roller. The best ones to use are the Wooster Jumbo-Koter roller and it's cage frame.

We use a small paint tray for the roller and a pant brush for cutting in where the roller cannot get like the sides of the door and the doorway trim and jam. There is also a Pelican bucket that fits both your roller and paint brush. See your local paint store for that.

The other doors to paint are the hollow-core embossed type of panel doors and the heavier solid-wood panel doors. When painting these, you need to run your paint brush with the direction of the grains in the sections as they are assembled.

In paneled doors you have sections going up and down and sideways. You have to paint or brush in the direction of the grain to make it look right.

On wood paneled doors you can cover a larger area using a speed roller and stroke it out with your paint brush to save time, tack-up and to keep the brushed look. The average door and doorway takes about 3 hours "per side" doing two coats (a primer coat and a finish coat).

You don't just walk up to a door and paint it. Just like any woodwork, to do a professional job you want to do the necessary prep work first and apply two coats always for a nice solid finished look. I always use a "satin finish" in a top-quality paint like Benjamin Moore.

So you have a passion to paint? I know how you feel, so do I. Many a time on a Sunday morning I have looked forward to being able to get started on a new painting project I had going starting Monday. I never felt that way about a regular job. As the old saying goes, when you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life!

I remember in the earlier days of my painting business when I didn't charge as much as I could. I would be thinking to myself that if I could only make the good money, the money that I would really like to make, I could slow down and enjoy my work. The only trouble was, being a newbie painter I really didn't know what I was doing business-wise when it came to [tag]estimating a paint job[/tag]. I had no method in place for how to properly price my work.

It took a while for me to develop an estimating system that worked perfectly every time. Now days, my system is so good and so sure that if someone turns down my bid I walk away and go do the next estimate. I can do this because I know I'm right and my bid is fair and they just cannot afford me. I played the fool and gave away my work and under-bid for lack of confidence in the earlier days,

Now the tables are turned and customers respect me because they know that I know what I'm doing. It's just that simple. I never really lost out though completely in any of my painting jobs. As Proverbs says in the Bible, "There is profit in all labor".

I found that to be so true because some of the people that I previously worked for and lost money on doing their job, that same customer later turned me on to new customers who I worked for and continued to work for from time to time and did make good money. So it's true. There is profit in all labor. So don't be afraid of failure, it is only a learning process.

But I love walking into someone's home or place of business now days and being able to do a super-clean, super-fast, sure-fire [tag]painting estimate[/tag] and walking away knowing that I am definitely going to make good money and not lose money. And you will have this same confidence as long as you get some specialized knowledge as in any other business venture.

Experience is a cruel taskmaster. You can save yourself from the long and winding learning curve by getting all the facts needed to successfully run your own painting business today. You can be in profit today. The Paint Like A Pro Estimating and Advertising CD was written and developed over a 4-year period by yours truly and works like a charm.

I can estimate my paint jobs and advertise effectively today even if it is during the Holidays and make great money and it sure makes painting enjoyable and not a burden as in the early days.
