Do you ever wonder why some guys take up painting? By the look of their work you would think that even their wives wouldn't let them paint their own houses let alone anayone elses.
Two guys with a van think they can paint. They think that painting is easy, They paint four walls without any prep work, they get paint all over the woodwork etc.
Why didn't they become janitors or window washers? Anyways for us painters who do do good work, there is plenty of referrals for us from satisfied customers and repeat business as well. A fellow painter was just asking if you can make a decent living year round in Pittsburgh. He lives in Florida and is moving to Pittsburgh soon. (Why he wants to leave sunny Florida for cold Pittsburgh sounds crazy.)
One of his friends told him that he couldn't make a living there from November through March. He said it was dead that time of year. Another guy told him the opposite with which I totally agree from my own experience.
The truth is, you can get just as much painting business during the winter months as you can during the summer months. As a matter of fact, I started my painting business in the end of summer and stayed busy that winter.
I did have a few rough Holiday times though until I learned how to remedy that. If the painting season stopped at winter time until March I guess all the paint stores would close at that time every year for the season - except in Florida.
Many painters that do new construction like to take the doors down and paint them in an empty room. Some like to leave them up and switch the hinges for temporary old ones while they spray. But that's new construction.
I do mostly re-paints where I have always brushed my doors because you cannot spray in someones home of course. If I had a pole barn or a shop at home and I had a lot of doors to do on a particular job, you can bet I would clear out my van and go and pick those babies up and bring them to my shop.
I would prep and spray them with an enamel under-coater primer first and then top coat them using a top-of-the-line satin enamel. Once dry overnight, I would carefully wrap each one in my van with drop cloths and cardboard and bring them back to the home I'm painting in and re-hang them. Spraying latex enamels, the right ones anyways, is supposed to look pretty good if done right. This would save time also making you more profit per hour. This is how to paint doors the fastest.
Many painting business owners (as many as 60%) have no business plan. If you want maximum profits from your painting business you may want your own business plan.
The good news is that it doesn't have to be a complicated plan to work well. Most business plans are too complicated. Yours can be four basic parts: Where are we going?, Where are we today?, What goals must we meet to get where we want to be? and What are our time limits?

If you have always wanted to start your own painting business and have it run smoothly and profitably right from the start…, if you would like to go home at night and relax in your easy chair with a smile on your face and the sweet feeling of having your entrepreneurial desires accomplished, below are 6 tips that can get you there fast.
1.) Use the best paint available for residential painting – I use Benjamin Moore paint in people's homes. The new latex version of their famous Satin Impervo for woodwork and trim is outstanding. Their Regal wall paint in the Matt finish is very good also, especially when it comes to wash ability that doesn't leave burnishing marks like with cheaper paints.
You just can go wrong using a high quality name like Benjamin Moore – especially when the products are excellent and user-friendly. This brand name is always welcomed in the finest of homes (million dollar homes) as well as everywhere else! READ MORE
